Principal's Pen -

Dear Friends of St. Joseph’s,

Most of us are relieved that the weather has moderated. That gives the heating budget a break. I told the students the other morning that my theory of January thaws is that we have them in order to make room for what is to come- I’ve never tested that theory.

The news out of Haiti is certainly grim. For too many of us experience with a disaster is too fresh in our memory. The devastation in Haiti must be beyond comprehension. One of the major tasks that has to be accomplished right away is to determine what the needs are and to publicize them. My guess is that the people of the Baraboo area are more sensitive to the plight of the Haitians than most Americans due to involvement through efforts like the Wisconsin Medical Mission and St. Joseph’s sister parish in Thiotte.

A group of students met with me to see if they could do something to help the people in Haiti. They are planning to do something like holding a bake sale to raise money for disaster relief.  I was impressed by the fact that this group of kids seem to understand that what will be needed is cold, hard cash.

On Wednesday morning we conducted our school Geography Bee. Seven fourth and fifth graders had successfully navigated through classroom bees to become the school contenders.  After a rigorous battle Jack Zabel emerged as the school’s champion, besting Erik Eilertson and Jarod Goff.  Being that Erik and Jarod are fourth graders we can expect that next year’s Bee will be an exciting contest.  Congratulations are in order to all of the contestants.

Enjoy the January thaw and remember that when it’s time to stay inside again there are plenty of books waiting to be read!
