Catholic Social Teachings

As Catholics we are called to serve one another, especially the poorest members of society.   Modern Catholic social teaching is the body of social principles and moral teaching that is articulated in the papal, conciliar, and other official documents issued since the late nineteenth century and dealing with the economic, political, and social order.  The depth and richness of this tradition can be understood best through a direct reading of these documents.  These teachings help us to fulfill Jesus' command "love each other as I have loved you."

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has highlighted seven main themes to the Catholic Social Teachings:

  • Life and Dignity of the Human Person
  • Call to Family, Community, and Participation
  • Rights and Responsibilities
  • Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
  • The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
  • Solidarity
  • Care for God's Creation
